Getting ready for your new kitten

Picture
Once you have chosen your kitten and put down a deposit you have to wait.  Kittens go to their new homes at around 14 weeks - this is to ensure their vaccination programme runs smoothly and that they are fully independent from their mum. Waiting is hard, but you can prepare your house for your new arrival. Make sure that you have a few days at home during the kitten's arrival, so that you are there to reassure him/her and develop a special bond together.

Set up a litter tray in the room that the kitten will spend his/her first few days in your home. This needs to be the same type of litter as he/she is used to and it will help if the breeder gives you a tiny sample of used litter to tell the kitten by smell where the loo is. One of our first kittens hung on for a whole day before going to the loo in her new house because the litter tray was so clean she didn't know where to go!

Get a cat tree for climbing, scratching and sleeping on. This will help save your furniture. Orientals and Siamese need a large cat tree with different levels, because they have high levels of energy and love to climb.

Be prepared for the kitten to share beds with you and your family. Siamese and Orientals are renowned snugglers. Cats can physically see heat and these cats will make a beeline for a warm body in a bed! Avalon kittens are used to sleeping with people and are very gentle.

If your kitten is coming to live with an older cat, you might want to reassure the older cat by using some Feliway diffusers from your vet. You will also need to plan how you are going to introduce the kitten to your other pets - Avalon kittens come with a care sheet that will help you with this.
